Each with its own rhythm, its own cooking and its own best hour to step outside.

    Lanzarote

    Where the lava met the sea and Manrique found beauty.

    This is the place where it does not rain. Almost never, and almost nothing: there are whole months in which not a drop falls, and that is why the island is the colour it is. The green arrives planted by hand, in hollows dug into the volcanic gravel and shielded from the wind by a low half-moon wall.

    What never fails is the trade wind, which blows the year round and picks up in summer — which is why the heat here is never heavy. And unlike the other two, here the day does have seasons: June's is nothing like December's, and that changes entirely when you feel like stepping out.

    Where the monsoon sets the rhythm and spices scent the air.

    Here the year is counted in rains, not in seasons. A long one arrives in spring and a short one at the end of the year, and between the two the sky stays still for months. The rest is the monsoon, which turns around — and with it the colour of the water and what comes up to the table.

    It sits six degrees off the equator, so the day lasts much the same in January as in July and sunrise never keeps you waiting. What does move is the shoreline: twice a day the tide pulls far out and leaves the reef bare, and twice a day it comes back.

    Where the old town and the rice paddy are neighbours.

    Here the year splits into two clean halves, and the long one is the good one: half a year of high skies in which barely any water falls, with the sea climbing month by month until it passes twenty-nine degrees in summer. Then comes the autumn of the river, which swells — and the old town, which has lived beside it for centuries, learns to share the ground with it again.

    It is the stillest of the three coasts: the air barely moves and the heat stays, which is why here you go out early and go out again late. There is no road between the beach and the rice fields, and so the same day holds the sea in the morning and the countryside at dusk.

There's always a house at its best

Each coast measured against its own year, not against the other two: how close each month comes to the best that place gives. All twelve months have an answer, and it isn't always the same one.

The last column gives each coast's best month with the real sea temperature then. Thirty-year normals (1991-2020).

Each coast's season comes from its own ERA5 normals (Copernicus C3S, 1991-2020): that month's sea temperature less the water that falls, measured against that same coast's best and worst month; the months above its yearly average count as its season. ERA5 cells are about twenty-eight kilometres across and at a beach house fall over water, so rainfall enters a little below a land station's. These say how a month usually is, not how the next one will be.
