THE ISLAND

A habitable work of art.

Lanzarote is like no other island. Not for the volcanic landscape, but for the way it was protected from itself.

César Manrique, the Canarian artist who convinced the whole island that growing too fast kills places, left behind a design manual that still holds 50 years on: whitewashed architecture on black basalt, windows in Manrique green, no building taller than the palm trees, no neon signs, no generic hotel chains. The result: the only island in the Atlantic that looks designed by a single hand.

The eruption of Timanfaya in 1730 buried a third of the island in lava. Two centuries later, the farmers discovered that the basalt held the night moisture and sheltered the vines from the wind. So the vineyards of La Geria were born — semicircular pits dug into the lava, a single vine in each, hundreds of thousands of them. It looks nothing like an ordinary vineyard. It looks like a sculpture.

MONEA Royal Mónica sits at Playa Blanca, on the island's southern tip, with direct access to the coves of Papagayo. 215 rooms, three pools, a Kids Club and an All Inclusive board. The large hotel of the MONEA Tribu collection — the one that works in August and in February.

THE ISLAND AT THE TABLE

Three flavours to remember.

Salt-baked vieja with papas
No. 01 · THE SEA

Vieja con papas

The catch of the day — local parrotfish — salt-baked and served with wrinkled potatoes and two mojos: green from coriander, red from paprika. The most honest Canarian recipe — and the hardest to get right off the island.

Volcanic Malvasía
No. 02 · THE WINERY

Volcanic Malvasía

A white grape that grows in lava craters, with no water but the night dew the basalt soaks up. La Geria's volcanic Malvasía is one of Spain's great winemaking secrets — not a single bottle leaves the island.

Majorero cheese and gofio
No. 03 · THE RITUAL

Gofio and majorero

Toasted-wheat gofio, kneaded with warm milk. Majorero cheese cured in paprika. A shepherd's snack — what the farmers carried up the mountain. Here it's served on the terrace at six.

«Lanzarote can be grasped in a day — but it isn't exhausted in a year. Manrique left this island like a manual: don't compete with the landscape. Our vineyards, our hotels, our white houses — everything follows that rule. The island rules.»

What lies beyond the hotel.

The island in six tastes — Manrique rules.

La Geria

Vineyards in volcanic craters. 3 family wineries, a Malvasía tasting with Isabel. Home with three bottles you've chosen yourself.

Timanfaya

A National Park. A route with a local geologist through the lesser-known corners. A picnic on recent lava, a demonstration of geothermal heat.

Jameos del Agua

A Manrique masterpiece — an auditorium inside a volcanic cave. A private dinner with a classical concert. One of those places you never forget.

Papagayo

Turquoise coves in the south. Kayaking at dawn, snorkelling in underwater lava caves. Breakfast on the beach before a soul arrives.

Teguise market

Sunday morning at the oldest market in the islands. Majorero cheeses, mojos, local crafts. Before 11 — after that the cruise crowds arrive.

Famara

Cliffs 600 metres above the Atlantic. An epic sunrise. A surfers' village, a lesson on the black-sand beach. A fish lunch in the cove.
